The Vice-president of The Gambia has received us at her office in the ´State House´(= the government building) in Banjul twice already and she is very interested in the way we are providing help to her needy subjects.
She became the Vice President in March 1997 and was the first Gambian woman ever to hold an important position like that! We believe it is very contemporary and progressive that in a developing country like The Gambia – and particularly against an Islamic background – the second-in-command is a woman, who – on top of that – acts as Secretary of State for Women’s Affairs! Her Excellency used to study in The Netherlands, is very wise and can mingle extremely well with ordinary Gambians. She is very low-profile and not exactly an advocate of much ado regarding her profession, so no gold plates and cutlery for her.
