Nene
Nene, whose actual name is Baintou, is one of the girls who could not be spared at home and so she does not have an education. She is married to a Gambian who had been working in The Netherlands for 10 years. She has four children and moved to The Netherlands in 2012. Her husband earns a regular Dutch salary and so we do not financially support her any more. However, we are still in contact with her and it is nice to hear that whenever she leaves a spoken message that she is learning Dutch. When she met us for the first time in 1995, going to Europe by air was a real dream for Gambians, but at the same time also an impossibility. During the first years of our holidays there, we never saw a single Gambian on the aeroplane, but this has changed over the past few years.
